Dore and Geoff Baker give back with their Who's Next Community Giving Project. Military Animal Project is an organization based in Southern California. It provides military veterans who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury or Anxiety and Depression with comfort, support, companionship and a means to heal through animals. Their work with Emotional Support and Therapy Dogs, as well as their Equine Buddies Program brings much needed healing to our brave veterans. This organization is filling a much needed gap in our society. Our veterans served for us, now it’s time we serve them.

The Manna Conejo Valley Foodbank was founded in 1971 with the simple mission ‘to feed hungry people in the Conejo Valley’. On average, this organization serves more than 1400 people per month, with an even broader reach over the holidays. We personally support Manna Conejo Valley Foodbank with an annual food drive in our neighborhood. I love seeing people in our community bringing bags of groceries and gift cards to help feed others. I first became aware of this organization through a dear friend and fellow dog lover. She was the first person in my immediate circle to make a serious commitment to not purchasing products from companies that engaged in animal testing. Through her passion, I learned of Beagle Feedom Project. This organization works to free Beagles and other animals from experimentation in research laboratories. Their work spans all levels, from enacting new legislation, to informing consumers through their CrueltyCutter app to the actual rescue, healing and homing of animals who have been saved. It’s a giant undertaking to try and change the way big business is done, but they are making tremendous strides.

Thank you to everyone who voted in our first annual Holiday Give Back Challenge. This year, we selected five local charities and encouraged the community to visit our website and vote for their favorite. First prize was $1000 and second prize was $250. Today we got to visit with For the Troops in Simi Valley. They mail over 800 care packages per month to our amazing US Troops overseas. Great news! The national and state associations of Realtors, combined with local multiple listing services, came down with some important new rules this week. Listing agents will no longer be able to sell their own listings without entering them in the MLS and making the homes available to all agents and all buyers. This will help to ensure all sellers get the right price for their homes and will encourage buyers to have their own representation, as opposed to using the listing agent as their agent, too. I believe this is truly in the best interest of the public and is therefore, a good step for our industry.

The global pandemic of covid-19 has had a huge effect on our markets, including a lot of volatility in the lending market. FHA and VA loans got a boost from Ginnie Mae last week, which brought the cost of those loans back into the realm of affordability.

The forbearance that being offered through the CARES Act may or may not be the right choice for you. There could be better options than forbearance depending on your equity and employment situation.
